UU Trivia Question of the Day #47

More visual quizzes for this week.  Yesterday we took a quick peek inside a Unitarian-Universalist seminary: Meadville-Lombard Theological School.  Today we’re spying on a historic UU church.  Below is a picture of the congregation’s sanctuary, facing toward the pulpit.  Which congregation is it?

  1. Isn’t that Unity Temple up in Oak Park (Chicago)? One of the few designed by FLW.

Kim, that’s what I thought, too.

The next thing I thought was, Wow! It really looks beautiful compared to the somewhat creaky, leaky closeup I got one Sunday when I visited decades ago.

Have they fixed it up? My brother is a historic preservation architect and one of his vacation activities — on which I have from time to time gone along — is to visit famous FLW buildings and find the inevitable roof leak. Apparently the roof leak is a(n) FLW trademark for my brother and his colleagues.

He loves the buildings anyway. This photo certainly shows why.

Hey, Elz, I think they have been doing some restoration there. I had been attending there (but am now a slacker) and there were still cracks and some evident wear, but I think it’s had some major work done.

On the roof leak–when I went to Taliesen West they said that the problem wasn’t FLW’s architecture, but the inability of modern people to keep up the craftsmanship. Whether or not that’s true, it was the official line!
